Jay Alexander is an internationally recognized arbitrator. After beginning his career as a white collar criminal defense lawyer, he helped found and then co-chaired Baker Botts\"s international arbitration practice. He has particular expertise in the energy, telecommunications/technology, and banking/finance sectors, and has also arbitrated a wide variety of other high-stakes commercial disputes under the laws of New York, England and Wales, and many other common and civil law jurisdictions.
Experience
Arbitrator (chair, wing, sole, and emergency) in cases under the AAA Commercial (Large and Complex Cases), AAA Employment, ICC, ICDR, and LCIA Rules. These arbitrations involved energy (oil and gas, power), franchising and distributorship agreements, intellectual property, investment and breach of fiduciary duty issues, political risk insurance, project development, sale of goods, and technology and e-commerce. For the twenty years between 2002 and 2022 (when Jay ceased all counsel work), Jay had a full-time arbitration practice as counsel and arbitrator in high stakes, complex international commercial and investment treaty arbitrations handled under many different institutional rules, including those of the AAA, ICC, ICDR, ICSID, Korean Commercial Arbitration Board, LCIA, Stockholm Chamber of Commerce, and Swiss Chamber of Commerce. In the aggregate, these arbitrations had over US$ 100 billion at stake. Prior to 2002, Jay had a white collar criminal and commercial fraud litigation practice, with deep involvement in the banking, defense contractor, and insurance industries.
